Set 3300 metres above sea level, Songtsam Retreat looks over the enchanting old town of Shangri-La, which has at its heart the historical Songzanlin Si Monastery, dating back to 1679, one of the world’s largest Llama temples. Songtsam Retreat is surrounded by snow-topped mountains during winter, while in spring time, the hills and plains are an explosion of spring flower colours. Songtsam Retreat consists of 24 dry stone structures spread over two acres of hillside.
In the reception gallery, priceless Tibetan treasures greet visitors as they walk through the beautifully carved entrance portal – from the two ancient brass Buddhas to the intricate and exquisite prayer rugs mounted on the walls. Throughout Songtsam Retreat guests can soak up the magic of Shangri-La and learn about the local culture from the many artifacts featured in every space and from the staff who are the living embodiment of the Tibetan way in Shangri-La.
Guest suites showcase the best of local craftsmanship. Each suite boasts handcrafted furniture and fittings that capture the essence of Shangri-La, including hand-laid timber floors, oak wall paneling, Tibetan rugs and wooden bath tubs. Suites are designed for living – with raised bed platforms sitting above lounge areas complete with a cosy fireplace. Read a book, listen to music, watch films or gaze at the inspiring views over Shangri-La. The bathrooms are also vast and feature impressive deep timber baths perfect for a long, pampering soak.
The dining experience at Songtsam Retreat allows guests to experience the very best of local cuisine or indulge in more familiar culinary experiences. The Songtsam Retreat restaurants are situated together in the Naqu Lin building. In this area guests can also sip an evening cocktail in the bar, play billiards or board games in the library lounge, or enjoy alfresco dining and stunning mountain vistas on the two terraces. Chefs from around the world ensure the dining experience is both memorable and tantalising.
