The facade once concealed 5 waterside residences, nos. 65 - 73. In Medieval times, nos. 65 and 67 were convents. A Pietà (1566) was excavated at the site in 1985. The original was entrusted to the Historic Museum, a replica has since been displayed in the lobby as centrepiece. The premises 69, 71 and 73, once housed the newspaper “De Tijd”. The building, in those days situated at a canal, was known as the “Castle of Aemstel”. A tile picture of the castle and 2 knights, riding a boat on the river Amstel, after a poem by Vondel, still adorns the facade.
The illustrious past of The Convent Hotel and Amsterdam reverberates in many details: the facade, the stained glass windows, the Pietà, the tile picture. But whatever the building’s past designations, serviceability and a genuine regard for the visitor remains its calling today. A hotel, laden with character, where service, intimacy and style are held in the highest esteem. All this is felt, not only in the grandeur of the hotel, the décor, the colour scheme, the selected materials in the rooms and common areas, but especially in the personal service and courtesy our guests receive, from arrival to departure.
Each year thousands of visitors saunter through Amsterdam’s picturesque streets and alleyways in search of its hidden treasures; the famous Dutch masters in the museums, the cosy antique shops on the canals, or the modern work of yet to be discovered artists.
The Convent Hotel is situated in the historic heart of this dynamic, multicultural city, where there is so much to discover: the Central Station, the Royal Palace on the Dam Square, the flower market, and a host of other places of interest, can be found only several minutes by foot from the hotel. To fully appreciate the magic of the inner city, a view from the canals is a must.
The small size of Holland is perhaps what inspired in its people a desire to explore, and so doing, to develop trade relations with people of many cultures, in all corners of the world. To this day, the Dutch are respected as tough but honest negotiators, at ease in many languages. The openness and flexibility of Holland’s multicultural society go hand in hand with a forward style of communicating, which never fails to impress our guests. Famous for our tulips, wooden shoes and windmills, visitors are equally attracted by the country’s history, numerous places of interest, diverse culture, and proverbial ‘cosiness’.
