Une histoire longue et renommée

Cet hôtel légendaire a été construit en tant que résidence privée par un négociant chinois en 1918. En un siècle, d’un propriétaire à l’autre, sa fonction a évolué. A l’époque de la Grande Crise, il est devenu un hôtel de pensionnaires, jusqu’à l’occupation japonaise en 1942. Après la guerre, il fut la résidence officielle du Consul chinois. En 1951, le Directorat de la République d’Indonésie a géré l\'hôtel comme un établissement deux étoiles. Le défi du projet d’une importante restauration en 2004 consistait à le hisser au rang d\'hôtel-boutique de renommée internationale, sans négliger son précieux héritage culturel.

Un design exotique, reflet d’une culture unique

Trois siècles et demi plus tard, de nombreuses empreintes de l’époque de l’occupation néerlandaise en Indonésie sont encore visibles. Très éloignés de leur terre natale, les officiels néerlandais avaient tenté d’apporter une touche européenne. Le phénomène fut connu sous le nom de « Culture Indische », une association d’idées européennes et d’intérêts de l’archipel. L’Architecture Indische est l’héritage principal de cette culture. Son influence est présente dans tout l’archipel, où de nombreux bâtiments suscitent l’admiration des visiteurs, dont l’hôtel Phoenix de Yogyakarta.

La beauté symbolique du Phoenix

Dans beaucoup d’anciennes civilisations, le phénix était un oiseau sacré, à la queue dorée et au plumage rouge, censé vivre un millier d\'années. Au crépuscule de sa vie, le phénix construisait un nid auquel il mettait le feu. L’oiseau et le nid étaient réduits en cendres. Et des cendres rennaissait un jeune Phénix prêt a vivre un autre millénaire. Ce processus fascinant de régénération est synonyme d’Éternité. Le descendant du dernier propriétaire a donc rebaptisé l’hôtel de ce nom, dans l’espoir qu’il demeurerait a jamais intact.

Das imposante Hotel war ursprünglich ein privater Wohnsitz, der 1918 von chinesischen Kaufleuten erbaut wurde. Im letzten Jahrhundert wechselte es öfters seinen Besitzer und erfuhr etliche Funktionsänderungen. Zur Zeit der Großen Depression war das Hotel ein Rentnerheim bis zur japanischen Besetzung im Jahre 1942. Nach dem Krieg wurde es als Amtssitz des chinesischen Konsuls genutzt. Ab 1951 wurde es vom Präsidium der Republik Indonesien als ein 2-Sterne-Hotel geführt. 2004 avancierte es zu einem erstklassigen Boutique-Hotel, ohne sein kostbares Kulturerbe in Vergessenheit geraten zu lassen.

Exotische Design spiegelt eine besondere Epoche

Die holländische Besetzung in Indonesien hat in vieler Hinsicht Spuren hinterlassen. Tausende von Kilometern von der Heimat entfernt, versuchten die holländischen Funktionäre, ein Stück Europa in ihr neues Land zu bringen. Europäische Ideen wurden mit den Interessen des Archipels kombiniert, wodurch sich eine komplexe eurasische Kultur entwickelte. Zudem entstand eine bedeutende eurasische Architektur. Ihre Spuren findet man in den historischen Gebäuden der gesamten Inselgruppe. Viele dieser bewundernswerten Gebäude sind noch sehr gut erhalten. Das Phoenix-Hotel in Yogyakarta ist eines davon.

Die Schoenheit der Phoenix in Symbolen

Mythologie ist der Phönix ein heiliger Feuervogel, der einen schönen goldenen Schwanz und ein rotes Federkleid besitzt und ein Alter von tausend Jahren erreicht. Am Ende seines Lebens baut sich der Phönix ein Nest, in dem er verbrennt. Nach Erlöschen der Flammen entsteht aus der Asche ein Ei, aus dem ein neuer Phönix schlüpft, der wieder ein Jahrtausend lang lebt. Durch seine Fähigkeit zur Regeneration wurde der Phönix zum Symbol der Ewigkeit. Der Nachfahre des letzten Eigentümers hat dem Hotel in der Hoffnung den Namen Phönix verliehen, dass es für immer unversehrt bleibt.

A long and eminent history

This legendary hotel was initially built as private estate by a Chinese trader in 1918. Over the last century, it was passed on through several proprietors and experienced many changes in function. During the Great Depression, it was turned into a Pensioner Hotel until 1942. After the war, it was used as the official residence of Chinese Consul. In 1951, The Directorate of Republic of Indonesia managed it as a two-star hotel. In 2004, the challenge was to upgrade it into a world-class boutique hotel without neglecting its precious cultural heritage.

A unique culture reflected in exotic design

Three-and-a-half centuries of Dutch occupation in Indonesia had left traces in many aspects of life. Thousands of miles from home, Dutch officials tried to bring a piece of Europe to their new land. The phenomenon was known as Indische Culture – an effort to combine European ideas with Archipelago interests. Indische Architecture is one of the focal achievements of this culture. Its traces can be found in the many historic buildings located throughout the archipelago, many of which are extremely well-preserved and admired by visitors. Both the nest and the bird burn fiercely and are reduced into ashes, from which a new, young phoenix egg arises – reborn to live for another century. This amazing process of regeneration is perceived as a symbol of Eternity. The descendant of the hotel’s last proprietor adopted it as the name of the hotel, with the hope that it will remain intact forever.
